In this concert, Cantabile seeks to explore texts and music of poets and composers who have expressed their struggles and hopes through choral arts. These works allow us to better understand and process both our individual and collective challenges, which will hopefully allow us to feel joy and to love more deeply.

Highlights include Jeffrey Van’s A Procession Winding Around Me set to the poetry of Walt Whitman and featuring Boulder-based guitarist Gabriel Santiago, as well as Benjamin Britten’s cantata Rejoice in the Lamb, the text of which was written by 18th century poet Christopher Smart while he was in an asylum. Other works include Lissa Schneckenburger’s Hope Lingers On — a heartfelt, determined, and timely call for optimism — and a number of African American spirituals that speak to the lived experience of those suffering enslavement. Finally, we will also premiere Never, composed by Cantabile’s own Margaret Friesen, who invites us to share in her personal struggles which she beautifully presents through text and music.
